Pairings: None. Gen. Although there’s hints of ships if you squint.
Summary: Ichigo, Ishida, Rukia, Chad, and Orihime. For each other is why they fight, even if they don’t see it yet.
When Uryuu wakes, his father is gone (and it doesn’t hurt), and he thinks about his comrades (not friends) and what they’d say if they knew he was getting his powers back.
Krosaki would scowl at him and remark about how Uryuu was just trying to get stronger then him, although there would be hint of something more in the back of his eyes.
Chad probably wouldn’t say anything, but just look at him like he understood, rather or not he did.
Kuchiki would probably just lift her chin, with a faint trace of a smile on her face.
Inoue would smile at him and say ‘how wonderful! You’ll be able to help protect your friends better now!’ Maybe she’d dance, too.
Uryuu doesn’t allow himself to think of how he’d feel to all their responses and pushes down the feeling curling within his chest before closing his eyes and turning his head to the side.

Chad wipes the sweat off of his face as he stands up.
He still sees the look on Inoue’s face in the back of his mind. He still remembers her words and the anger he felt is still there.
He doesn’t even try to think the anger is still for Uruhara, for the cruel words he said. He knows that anger is directed to himself, because he isn’t strong enough to be more then a burden for Ichigo. He know exactly what Inoue’s feeling.
Renji smirks at him, “Ready?”
(But, soon, he’ll be strong enough to stay by Ichigo’s side.)
Chad attacks.

There’s something different in Inoue’s eyes now.
Rukia always knew that Inoue has a certain strength within her. Something steady and determined, something that kept her reaching out and almost touching Ichigo. Maybe she was close to seeing that strength now.
Inoue tilts her head back and smiles at her. “Ready, Kuchiki-san?”
(Maybe Rukia’s almost seeing her own strength, too.)
Rukia nods sharply and takes several steps over to her.
They walk together, side by side.

Ichigo glares at the ground and breaths heavily as he leans against his sword. His heart is pounding against his chest and he can hardly move.
He hates these moments. Because he keeps thinking about how he failed. About how he wasn’t strong enough for everyone. About how they all almost died because he was still that child who got his mother killed.
He bites his bottom lip as he pushes himself up and grabs his sword. He turns around swiftly, ignoring the pain shooting through him.
“Who’s next?”
