Double-Edge
By: (Yami) White Rain
Disclaimer: I do not own Bleach.
Pairing: Hitsugaya/Hinamori
Summary: Hitsugaya and Hinamori in the aftermath of Aizen’s death.
Some days she’ll forget.
It’s a double edge-sword, because these days she’ll actually smile. And when Hitsugaya teases her, she’ll get huffy and tease him back. It feels like nothing’s changed. But, in the end, she’ll ask where her captain is.
Hitsugaya doesn’t have the heart to tell her that Aizen is dead. Because her eyes aren’t dead and her mouth isn’t fixed in a frown, and he’s selfish enough to want her to stay that way, even if it’s just for a moment. Even if it is a lie.
Instead, he’ll make up some excuse, say he’s at a meeting and will be gone all day. She’ll smile at him and he pretends with her.
-
Most days she will remember.
There is a lost air around her. She won’t say much and often she’ll cry. Hitsugaya doesn’t really know what to do when she does, so he’ll set his hand on her shoulder, feeling suddenly as if he doesn’t really belong in his own skin.
Sometimes she’ll press her face into his chest and sob. Part of him will want to pull away because there will be a stupid nagging voice in the back of his head that says, ‘cooties’. Instead he’ll grow very still and wait until she realizes what she’s done, and pulls away.
He thinks she feels the awkwardness between the two of them in those moments as well, but she’ll be so absorbed in her own grief, she doesn’t acknowledge it.
Hitsugaya probably shouldn’t be relived. Maybe if he did push her, she’d heal better. But, the same voice that says ‘cooties’ tells him to wait.

Hitsugaya is surprised the first time they kiss, because it’s Hinamori who kisses him. He never really thought about much, because he’d figured they’d never get past the awkward silences when she cried on him. But, he thought he’d be the one to kiss her if they ever did kiss.
There was something fierce and desperate in the back of her eyes, the same kind when she said she was going to kill him, but without the tears. Hitsugaya didn’t get a chance to ask her about what was wrong because she had leaned over and pressed her lips against his.
They were both very, very still for what felt like hours to Hitsugaya. He wasn’t sure what to do with his arms, so he kept them very still against his sides.
When she pulled away from him, she ran off before he could say a word. Hitsugaya was too dazed to move for awhile, so he didn’t get to chase after her. And when he came to, she was gone.
-
The two of them haven’t talked about the kiss yet. However, Hinamori hasn’t thought Aizen was still alive, even for a moment, since they kissed a month ago, and some days she doesn’t cry at all.
Hitsugaya is content to keep staying by her side, no matter what happens.
