Renji remembers the exact moment he fell in love with Rukia (although maybe he’s always been in love with her, maybe it was the moment he realized he loved her.)
There was a forlorn look on her face and her eyes were squeezed tightly and there was blood on her hands.
He touched her shoulder, and trying to decide if it was better to cheer her up by teasing her or comforting her when her eyes popped open and she gave him a big, fake grin.
“Let’s go,” she said.
“Rukia – ”
“I’ll be okay.”
It was the first time that Renji felt he’d ever seen a flicker of the real Rukia. And he remembers the feeling that he wanted to see more of her, the real her, that he’d be forever happy if he could.
Because sometimes that’s the only thing he can feel, the only thing that keeps him going.
