The first place she takes Suzaku is to the playground.

For as long as she could remember, Euphemia would sometimes sneak out and walk to a nearby park and watch the children play.

(Cornelia taught her how to do this, and Euphemia suspects she makes sure Euphemia can get away with it.)

She tended to watch the swing-set. She watched children either move the swings up and down by themselves or how parents or older siblings or baby sitters pushed the child.

She's never been on the swing-set, and when she watched from the bench, her long hair covering her face as she pretended to read a book, she wondered what it would be like. She couldn't decide if she would rather move by herself (it takes strength and it's something she knows she must build up) or to have someone she cared about push her (Cornelia is the only one who cares, and she must love through shields and Euphemia wishes she didn't have too.)

Even now, when she's much too old to swing on a swing-set, she sometimes tries to get away from her duties in order to watch. It's the only childhood she's ever had, even if it was one she couldn't reach.

It's clear that Suzaku doesn't really understand why they're here, but he doesn't question her. She watches a small child pump (she'd only learned a few months ago that that's what it was called) for awhile, before eying Suzaku.

He looked really young.

He shouldn't have to give up his childhood, so she'd find a way to give it back to him. It was a firm decision, she would make sure it happened, no matter what. It was the first time she'd ever felt so sure about something, ever made a decision so final before.

She hoped it wouldn't be the last time.

(When Suzaku knelt before her, she couldn't help but think it wouldn't be, even if the thought was brief.)
